Piedmont Citizens Head to the Polls to Vote for their Man or Woman, this February 7th, 2012.

The clock is ticking and nerves undoubtably are shot.  It has been 6 long months of campaigning. I don’t know how they do it.

Motivate and assemble a team, seek supporters, spread the word, campaign one on one, on the phone, in person, in a store or by knocking on a door.  Meetings and more meetings, meet and greet parties, fundraisers, school meetings, parent board meetings and so much more.

This was my first experience being part of a campaign.  I can say I learned something new.  Which is always one reason why I always like to get involved.  I wish all the canidates my very best.  I know each and everyone has put their heart and soul into their campaign.  As a personal, longtime friend of the McBain family, and one of the board members on Bob’s campaign, I thought I would share why I believe in Bob.

Good Luck to all of the candidates!

You did your best and gave it your all.

In just 45 minutes the polls will close, the parties will begin and the anticipation will be coming to an end.

All I can say is… thankfully it is not me!

Longtime Family Friends

Bob and I at the 2010 Winter Ball and debut of his oldest daughter, Liz.

Why I believe in Bob.

Bob and I come from very different backgrounds.  That is what makes life interesting for me.  I enjoy meeting new people as well as learning new things about my friends, clients, and colleagues.  Hearing their stories.. where they and their families came from, what got them here and what was their life like growing up.  I find it so appealing because I am from Piedmont.  I grew up in town, went to Wildwood Elementary, PMS then Piedmont Junior High, PHS and Camp Augusta… raised in town since I was three, forming relationships, just as your kids are doing today.  My own office is the same exact spot where I went each day after school, at lunch and on the weekends to buy candy for myself and gifts for birthday parties – The Highlander Candy Store as I called it or Springman’s.  Not a whole lot has changed.  Well, Convenient ( then Bonfaire ) is now Mulberries and we now have Piedmont Play School, Coaches Field and our amazing Witter Field, to name a few.

Bob is different.  He was an army brat, traveling from town to town and from school to school.  He did not have a sense of community or a group of friends whom he could share memories or the hard knocks of life.  Each year it was not uncommon for Bob to have to start all over again —  make new friends, try to fit in and find his groove.  I think that takes a special person.  When asked, “Why are you running?”  The answer is always the same – whether Bob is addressing an audience or in our own casual conversation – The answer is the same:  he is grateful for the foundation that Piedmont has provided himself and his family and wants to give back.

Why do I  believe in Bob for Piedmont City Council?

Simply Put:

1.      Compassionate:  Bob cares for Piedmont and feels very lucky to have discovered  our town.

2.      Qualified:  Bob comes from a financial background in banking which makes him a highly qualified council member.

3.      Proven Track Record:  Bob has spent numerous hours volunteering as a coach ( year after year ) and has held various volunteer positions like the Rec Commission. There are many – please see website to learn more. http://www.mcbaincitycouncil.com/about-bob

4.      Committed to Our Success:  Bob is committed to the success of our town and to each and every generation.

Please vote for Bob.

I know he will listen to your concerns and bring your voice to each council meeting.

He is always available to you.

Thank you for your time.

Funniest Moment
Chase going to the bathroom when we were about to land and the flight attendant slammed the door shut as Chase started to open it.  We learned later that Chase pulled back down his pants and sat back down on the toilet.  I guess he assumed if he was in the bathroom he had to  be sitting on the toilet.  He landed in the bathroom.  I don’t know how often that has happened.

Lessons Learned: Magnified

will to succeed

determination

teamwork

leadership

friends & teammates  ( my boys! )

The Piedmont High School JV Highlanders Football Season was one of celebration and lessons learned.  Of course, it would have been wonderful if the team won all of their games, however, the experience of their few losses allowed them to learn so much more.  Although I am not very knowledgeable about football, it was much easier for me to follow along then I thought.  Not only having my son’s bright shoes as a reference point, but knowing his friends on the field allowed me to understand more easily.  A proud mother, of 45 football players, I’d say.  I reveled in each game as I witnessed their quick moves, timely plays, amazing interceptions, awe inspiring completions, and knock down tackles.  As in life, lessons learned can be used in the future, whether in business or social, as an individual, or as a team… if you allow them.

Just as an actor may draw upon his or her emotions and past experiences to deliver a magnificent performance, these athletes will draw from this season… lessons of a lifetime.

Wildwood Elementary School – Many Years Ago

i was inspired to post this blog to commemorate the newly updated and beautiful Wildwood Elementary School, my alma mater.

you are viewing our 6th grade class at Wildwood Elementary and PHS class of 1982

can you find me?

can you find scott hill or is it kent hill?  one of the hill twins is definitely in this photo.   scott, kent and i have been friends since kindergarten and we still see many of the faces pictured in this class photo.

back in the day, Wildwood ( our school ), Havens and Beach Elementary Schools all started in Kindergarten and went through the 6th Grade.   Wildwood was the medium sized school, Beach being the smallest and Havens double the size.  we were the WILDWOOD WINNERS and Coach Humphries ( the current Piedmont High School PE Teacher ) was our elementary school PE teacher.  and Rich was our janitor.  ( he recently retired from PMS in 2011 the same year our son Chase and Scott’s son Skip graduated from PMS )   we played 4 Square at lunch and at recess and after school bruised our wrists at tetherball and we all wore white Jack Purcells.

our last year of junior high came one year early for us.  we spent the 7th and 8th grade in Piedmont Junior High as our 9th grade year was the year they switched things up in Piedmont and moved us upward and onwards from the junior high to the high school the same year as the class of 1981.   we went from being 8th graders in the middle of the pack, sandwiched between the 7th and 9th graders and then went back down to the bottom as we entered PHS as lower classman – 9th graders.   they separated us from the upper classman as our building and red lockers were located down below the main campus where the Millenium School is now.

two things stand out most

in the 7th grade i got glasses.  i will never forget putting my glasses on and looking out from the second floor balcony of the Piedmont Junior High School in awe.  i just never knew the sky was so blue and the buildings and bridges were so beautifully defined and clear.  it was  truly incredible.

the second was in 9th grade when i got a perm.  gosh only knows why i did that.  but just like everyone else, you want what you don’t have, right?  well i got it.  curly hair.  boy did i get it.  i walked through the double doors, down the long red hallway wearing my FROSH Cheerleading outfit ( i was head cheerleader – so you could have guessed ) and everyone knew ( even without the convenience of Facebook ) everyone knew i had gotten a perm and that i hated it.  as i recall, scott and kent were the first to see me and to tease me.  i’ll never forget it.

and now, they work for me!

( actually, we all work together at HIGHLAND PARTNERS, but that was a good punch line, don’t you think? )

the teasing was all in good fun.  i have always had the ability to laugh at myself.  it was at that very moment when i first learned and clearly understood the phrase —  “and it too will pass”.  i knew my hair would grow out and all would be okay.

we have to remember to share that simple phrase with our children, our clients, our family, friends and colleagues.   so much is happening out there in the world today and in our own lives, but we have to remember and remind —  “it too will pass”.

xoxo!

Hosting a Trunk Show – stella & dot

I hosted a trunk show for my friend launching her new career with stella and dot.  I never get to see her since she lives in LA.  So it was really fun to hang out and support her new venture.  Stella and Dot is such a fun jewelry line and prices are great too.  You don’t feel guilty if you indulge.  (That’s my dining room.)
